Because its rewards are so narrow, it’s worth understanding exactly what the card offers before choosing it over SoFi’s other cards. Below, we explain how it works, what it costs and how it compares.

Pros and cons of the SoFi Essential Credit Card

Pros

  • No annual fee and no returned payment fee
  • 3% cash back rewards on travel booked through the SoFi Travel Portal
  • Soft credit pull when you apply; a hard pull happens only if you’re approved
  • Rewards can go into SoFi savings, investing or loan payments at 1 cent per point

Cons

  • No rewards on purchases outside the SoFi Travel Portal
  • 29.99% variable APR, higher than the starting rates on SoFi’s other cards
  • No welcome bonus or intro APR
  • Balance transfers currently limited to people who receive promotional offers

How it compares with SoFi’s other cards

Card Rewards Purchase APR Annual fee
SoFi Essential 3% on SoFi Travel bookings only 29.99% variable $0
SoFi Everyday Cash Rewards 3% dining, 2% groceries, 1% other 19.99% to 32.99% variable $0
SoFi Unlimited 2% 2% on all eligible purchases 19.99% to 29.99% variable $0

All three cards also earn 3% on SoFi Travel Portal bookings. The difference is what happens on everyday purchases: the Everyday Cash Rewards and Unlimited 2% cards earn rewards on them, and the Essential doesn’t. If you qualify for either of the other two, they will almost always earn you more.

Terms checked in September 2026 from SoFi’s Essential Credit Card terms and rewards details. SoFi may change or discontinue products and benefits, so confirm the current terms before you apply.

How the rewards work

The card earns 3% cash back rewards on travel booked through the SoFi Travel Portal, which is operated by Expedia. To qualify, you need to be a registered SoFi user, book through the portal link on SoFi’s website or app and pay with your SoFi card. Bookings made directly on Expedia don’t count, and canceled bookings lose their rewards.

SoFi’s rewards terms for the Essential card list no other earning rate on card purchases. You can redeem points at 1 cent each into active SoFi accounts, including a statement credit on the card. If you close the card, you lose your remaining points 90 days later.

What you need to get approved

You must be at least 18, or of legal age in your state, and live in the United States. SoFi verifies that your income is enough to support your ability to pay and sets your credit line based on your income, debts and credit history. If you’re approved, your credit line will be at least $500.

SoFi offers its cards through the Check for Offers tool and mailed offers. When it receives your application, it does a soft credit pull, which doesn’t affect your score. A hard pull, which might affect your score, happens only if you’re approved.

How we rate the SoFi Essential Credit Card

The SoFi Essential is a no-annual-fee card with a narrow purpose. If you book trips through the SoFi Travel Portal and pay your balance in full, it returns 3% on those bookings at no annual cost. On everything else, it earns nothing.

That makes it the weakest of SoFi’s three cards for most people. The Everyday Cash Rewards and Unlimited 2% cards earn the same 3% on SoFi Travel and add rewards on everyday spending, often with a lower starting APR. The Essential may make sense if it’s the only SoFi card you’re offered, and you mainly want a basic card with no annual fee.
