How to get the SoFi Essential Credit Card
Checking your offer, applying and choosing the right SoFi card

The SoFi Essential Credit Card is a no-annual-fee Mastercard® from SoFi Bank, N.A. that earns 3% cash back rewards on travel booked through the SoFi Travel Portal and no rewards on other purchases. This guide helps you decide whether it’s the right SoFi card for you, then walks through how to check your offer, apply and manage the account.
Is the SoFi Essential the right SoFi card for you?
SoFi offers three credit cards, and the Essential is the most limited of them. All three earn 3% on SoFi Travel Portal bookings, but only the Essential earns nothing on everyday purchases. Its purchase APR is also a single 29.99% variable rate, while the other two cards start at 19.99%.
The Essential can still make sense in a few situations:
- It’s the SoFi card you’re offered, and you want a basic card with no annual fee
- You book trips through the SoFi Travel Portal and want 3% back on them
- You pay your balance in full every month, so the APR doesn’t matter to you
If you’re offered the Everyday Cash Rewards or the Unlimited 2% instead, either one will earn more on typical spending.
We do not receive any monetary compensation when you click on a redirect to the card website or app.
Where the SoFi Essential could improve
- No rewards on purchases outside the SoFi Travel Portal
- Higher starting APR than SoFi’s other cards
- No welcome bonus or intro APR
- Balance transfers available only to people who receive promotional offers
- Full rewards value requires redeeming into a SoFi account
What it costs to keep the card
There’s no annual fee and no returned payment fee, and the card’s published terms don’t list a foreign transaction fee. If you pay your full balance by the due date, 25 days after each billing cycle closes, you won’t pay interest on purchases. The costs to watch are:
- Purchase APR: 29.99% variable
- Cash advance APR: 30.49% variable, with a 5% fee
- Balance transfer fee: $10 or 5%, whichever is greater
- Late payment fee: up to $41
- Minimum interest charge: $1

How to apply for the SoFi Essential Credit Card
The card’s page on SoFi’s website doesn’t include a direct application link. Instead, SoFi offers two ways in: the Check for Offers tool and, if you received a mailed offer, an option to enter your confirmation number and ZIP code.
- Select Check for Offers on SoFi’s website or app, or enter the confirmation number from your mail offer.
- See which SoFi card you’re offered and review its terms before continuing.
- Complete the application with your name, address, date of birth and income. SoFi may ask to see your driver’s license or other identification.
- Submit the application and allow up to 30 days for processing.
SoFi does a soft credit pull when it receives your application, which doesn’t affect your score. A hard pull, which might affect your score, happens only if you’re approved. To qualify, you must be at least 18, or of legal age in your state, live in the United States and show enough income to support your ability to pay. Approved accounts get a credit line of at least $500.

Managing your account
You manage the card in the SoFi app or on SoFi’s website, where you can check your balance and available credit, view statements and transactions, make payments and redeem rewards. The Essential is a fully digital product, so statements and communications arrive electronically.
To earn the 3%, book travel through the SoFi Travel Portal link on SoFi’s website or app, not directly on Expedia, and pay with your SoFi card. Canceled bookings lose their rewards. You can redeem points at 1 cent each into active SoFi accounts, including a statement credit on the card. If you close the card, any remaining points are forfeited 90 days later.
You can also add authorized users. You’re responsible for all their charges, and SoFi may report the account’s performance in their name.
SoFi Essential vs. SoFi’s other cards
| Card | Rewards | Purchase APR | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoFi Essential | 3% on SoFi Travel bookings only | 29.99% variable | A basic no-annual-fee card |
| SoFi Everyday Cash Rewards | 3% dining, 2% groceries, 1% other | 19.99% to 32.99% variable | Heavy dining and grocery spending |
| SoFi Unlimited 2% | 2% on all eligible purchases | 19.99% to 29.99% variable | Spending across many categories |
All three have no annual fee and earn 3% on SoFi Travel Portal bookings. Check for offers first to see which card SoFi makes available to you, and if you have a choice, pick the one that matches where most of your money goes.
