The U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card is a no-annual-fee card that lets you choose your own cash back categories every quarter. This guide covers who can apply, how the application works and, just as important, what to set up after approval so you actually earn the higher rates.

The card at a glance

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Rewards: 5% on your first $2,000 in combined purchases each quarter in two categories you choose, 2% in one everyday category you choose and 1% on everything else
  • Welcome bonus: $200 after $1,000 in eligible purchases in the first 90 days
  • Intro APR: 0% on purchases for 15 billing cycles, and on balance transfers made within 60 days of account opening
  • APR after the intro period: 17.74% to 27.99% variable in recent offers
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2% to 3%, depending on the currency

Terms checked in September 2026. Confirm the current offer on U.S. Bank’s official website before you apply.

Who the card suits

The Cash+ card suits people who have predictable monthly spending in its 5% categories, such as utilities, cell phone bills, streaming or fast food, and who are willing to choose their categories every quarter. It’s less useful if you want a card you never have to think about, or if you do most of your grocery shopping at supercenters or wholesale clubs, which don’t count toward the bonus categories.

Who can apply

The card is available to U.S. residents only. U.S. Bank says its credit cards are generally for people with good to excellent credit. You don’t need a U.S. Bank checking account or any existing relationship with the bank to get the card.

If your credit needs work, U.S. Bank also offers the Cash+® Visa® Secured Card, which is designed to help you build or rebuild credit.

How to apply for the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card

  1. On the card’s page on U.S. Bank’s website, select See if I’m pre-approved. This check doesn’t affect your credit.
  2. Start the application and fill in your personal and financial information, including your Social Security number and income.
  3. If you want to transfer a balance, you can request it during the application. Transfers from other U.S. Bank accounts aren’t allowed.
  4. Review the terms and submit. U.S. Bank says you can get a decision in as little as 60 seconds.

Submitting a full application usually results in a hard inquiry on your credit report. If you request a balance transfer and change your mind, you can cancel it within 10 days of account opening by calling 800-285-8585.

After you’re approved: set up your categories

The most important step after approval is choosing your categories. You need to enroll in your two 5% categories and one 2% category every quarter. If you skip a quarter, all your purchases earn only 1% for that period.

A few tips to get the most from the card:

  • Pick 5% categories where you spend every month, such as home utilities, cell phone or TV, internet and streaming, so you reach the $2,000 quarterly cap without extra effort.
  • Set a reminder at the start of each quarter to review and activate your categories, since the options can change.
  • Book prepaid flights, hotels and car rentals directly in the U.S. Bank Travel Center to earn 5%.
  • Redeem your cash back at least once a year. Rewards expire 36 months after the billing cycle in which you earn them.

New cardholders also get a $0 fee offer on U.S. Bank ExtendPay® Plans opened in the first 60 days. ExtendPay lets you split eligible purchases over $100 into fixed monthly payments with a fixed monthly fee instead of interest.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I don't choose my categories?
All eligible purchases earn 1% cash back for that quarter. You need to enroll in your categories every quarter to earn 5% and 2%.
Which purchases don't count toward the bonus categories?
Grocery and gas purchases at discount stores and supercenters, such as Target and Walmart, and at wholesale clubs earn only 1%. Gas purchases at grocery stores also earn 1%. Bonus rates depend on the category code Visa assigns to each merchant.
How do I redeem my cash back?
Log in at usbank.com or in the U.S. Bank Mobile App, select View rewards on your Cash+ card and choose Redeem rewards. A statement credit or a deposit into a U.S. Bank checking or savings account gives you the maximum value. Other options, such as gift cards, may be worth less.
What is Real-Time Rewards?
It’s an optional redemption method. Once you enroll, you get a text after a purchase with the option to redeem your cash back toward it by replying REDEEM. You need enough rewards to cover the whole purchase, and the redemption value may differ from a statement credit or deposit.
Is the card good for travel abroad?
Not really. It charges a foreign transaction fee on purchases made abroad, so a card with no foreign transaction fees is a better choice for international trips.

Our take on the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card

The U.S. Bank Cash+ card can earn more than a flat-rate card if your regular bills fit its 5% categories and you remember to choose them every quarter. The 15-cycle intro APR adds value for a planned purchase or balance transfer. If you’d rather not manage categories, a simpler flat-rate card may suit you better.
