Who the card is for

The FIT™ Mastercard is designed for people with limited or damaged credit who have been turned down for other cards and can’t put down a security deposit. Because its fees are high relative to the $400 limit, it works best as a short-term tool: pay in full every month, build a record of on-time payments and move to a lower-cost card once your credit improves.

What you need to apply

You’ll be asked for your full name as it appears on government documents, your Social Security number, your date of birth and your physical address. P.O. boxes aren’t accepted. The bank uses this information to verify your identity and check your credit, together with details like your monthly income.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on the FIT™ Mastercard website, or by phone at 1-888-673-4755.
  2. Get a decision. In most cases the decision is instant, but if more information is needed, it can take up to 30 days.
  3. If you’re approved, pay the $95 processing fee. You need to pay it before your account is activated and you can use your credit.
  4. Wait for your card, which is mailed with your welcome materials within three business days of approval.

Activating your card

You can activate the card online through the website printed on the back of your card, or by phone. To activate by phone, call the toll-free number on the sticker attached to your card from the phone number you gave in your application, within 30 days of receiving it.

Once activated, enroll in Online Account Management or download the CFC Mobile Access app to view statements, check your balance and make payments.

What changes after the first year

Several fees are waived only for the first year. Starting in year two:

  • The annual fee rises from $99 to $125.
  • A monthly maintenance fee of $12.50 begins.
  • Cash advances cost $10 or 3%, whichever is greater.
  • Purchases in a foreign currency carry a 3% fee.

In total, you’ll pay $275 a year to keep the card from the second year on. That’s a good point to review your credit and check whether you qualify for a card with lower costs.

Your rights before and after you accept

According to the cardholder agreement, you can reject the account and get the processing fee and initial fees refunded as long as you haven’t used the card and haven’t made a payment after receiving a billing statement. If you later decide to close the account, you can get the annual fee credited back if you notify Continental Finance in writing within 30 days or one billing cycle, whichever is shorter, after the fee appears on your statement.

The agreement also includes a binding arbitration clause. You can opt out by mailing a written notice within 30 days of activating your card.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a security deposit?
No. The FIT™ Mastercard is unsecured, but you pay a $95 processing fee before activation, and the first-year annual fee is charged to your card when the account opens.
How much credit will I have available at first?
With a $400 limit, the issuer’s example shows $301 in initial available credit, because the $99 annual fee is billed to the account when it opens.
Can I get a cash advance?
Not in the first 95 days after your account opens. After that, you can request a PIN and use ATMs, but cash advances carry a 35.90% APR from the transaction date and, after the first year, a fee of $10 or 3%, whichever is greater.
Can I use the card abroad?
Yes, wherever Mastercard is accepted. There’s no foreign transaction fee in the first year, but after that each transaction in a foreign currency costs 3%.
Can I add an authorized user?
You can add one authorized user, subject to approval, for a one-time $30 fee. You’re responsible for all charges the authorized user makes.
What happens if I pay late?
You’ll be charged a late fee of up to $30, or up to $41 if you paid late again within the next six billing cycles. Late payments are reported to the credit bureaus, which works against the reason for having this card.

Our take on the FIT™ Mastercard®

The FIT™ Mastercard gives people with damaged credit access to an unsecured card that reports to all three bureaus, but it costs $194 in the first year and $275 a year after that. Before you pay the processing fee, compare it with a secured card with no annual fee. If you go ahead, use the first year to build a clean payment record and reassess before the higher fees begin.
