How the spending limit works
The Gold Card has no preset spending limit. Instead of a fixed credit line, the amount you can spend adjusts based on your purchase, payment and credit history. American Express may assign a specific limit in some cases, such as past-due payments or high balances on other accounts, and it will tell you why if that happens.
You can pay the full balance each month or carry eligible charges with interest through the Pay Over Time feature, up to your Pay Over Time limit. Paying in full avoids interest entirely.
Who can apply
You need to be at least 18 to apply. Under federal law, applicants under 21 must show enough independent income to make the payments. American Express doesn’t publish a minimum credit score, and approval depends on your credit profile.
Not every applicant receives a welcome offer, and the amount varies. Check the offer shown to you before you accept the card.
Information you’ll need to apply
The application is online, and in most cases you won’t need to upload documents. Have this information ready:
- Full legal name and date of birth
- Home address
- Social Security number
- Total annual income
American Express may ask for additional documents if it needs to verify your identity or income.

After you’re approved
If you’re approved and eligible, American Express can give you an instant card number to use online and in digital wallets before the physical card arrives.

Our take on the American Express® Gold Card
The American Express® Gold Card works best for people who spend a lot at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets and will use the monthly credits. If that’s not how you spend, the $325 annual fee is hard to justify, and a card with no annual fee may serve you better. Whichever you choose, paying the full balance each month keeps the Pay Over Time APR from eating into your rewards.
