Pros and cons of the Walmart Rewards credit card

Advantages

  • No annual fee;
  • Earn 3% in Walmart Reward Dollars on purchases at Walmart and 1% on purchases everywhere else;
  • Each reward dollar you earn is worth one dollar when you redeem it at Walmart;
  • Get up to 6 months of free Walmart+ membership every year, subject to conditions;
  • Split eligible Walmart purchases of $199.99 or more into 6 installments;
  • Mastercard Zero Liability protection against unauthorized transactions.

Disadvantages

  • Reward Dollars can only be redeemed at Walmart, so they’re less flexible than cash back;
  • Purchases outside Walmart earn only 1%;
  • The standard card doesn’t include travel or purchase insurance. Purchase Assurance and Extended Warranty are only included with the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard;
  • Interest rates are high if you carry a balance, and applicants who don’t qualify for the Preferred Rate Card may be approved at higher rates.

Who issues the Walmart Rewards credit card?

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard is issued by Fairstone Bank of Canada. Fairstone acquired Duo Bank of Canada, the card’s previous issuer, in 2023.

Fairstone Bank focuses on providing credit to a wide range of consumers, with personal loans and store-branded credit cards.

For questions about your account, you can call Fairstone toll-free at 1-888-331-6133.

What’s the Walmart Rewards card app like?

You manage your Walmart Rewards Mastercard through the online portal at walmartrewardsmc.ca. There, you can view your statements and transactions, make payments, check your Walmart Reward Dollars balance and manage your account information.

Don’t confuse it with the Walmart Canada app, which focuses on shopping. You can use the Walmart app to buy online, but card management happens through the Walmart Rewards Mastercard portal.

How to apply for your card?

You can apply for the Walmart Rewards Mastercard online or in a Walmart store.

Below is an overview of each option.

Online Application

  1. Visit the official Walmart Rewards Mastercard page;
  2. Click “Apply now” to start your application;
  3. Fill out the form with your personal, contact and financial details;
  4. Read and accept the terms and conditions;
  5. Submit your application for a credit check;
  6. Wait for the decision. If you’re approved, your card will be mailed to you.

In-Store Application

  1. Visit a participating Walmart store;
  2. Provide your personal and financial information;
  3. Present a valid government-issued photo ID;
  4. Wait for your application to be reviewed. If you’re approved, your card will be mailed to you.

Essential documents and information

Whichever way you apply, you’ll typically need to provide:

  • Your personal details and address;
  • A valid phone number and email address;
  • Your income information;
  • A valid government-issued photo ID, if you apply in store.

When you apply, you’re applying for the Preferred Rate Card. If you’re not approved for it, your application will also be considered for the Standard Rate Card, which has higher interest rates.

Why should you apply for the Walmart Rewards credit card?

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard makes the most sense for people who shop at Walmart regularly.

You earn 3% in Walmart Reward Dollars at Walmart and 1% elsewhere, and each reward dollar is worth one dollar at Walmart. Since the card has no annual fee, you don’t need to spend a minimum amount to make it worthwhile.

The card also includes a free Walmart+ membership for part of the year and the option to split larger Walmart purchases into installments.

However, your rewards can only be used at Walmart, the standard card doesn’t include insurance, and interest rates start at 21.99%. If you don’t shop at Walmart often, a cash back card you can use anywhere may be a better fit.
