Here’s an overview of the card’s features, costs and requirements.

Pros and cons of the Triangle Mastercard

Before deciding on any credit card, it helps to review how its rewards fit your routine, where you usually shop and how you plan to pay your balance.

Here’s our review of the Triangle Mastercard.

Pros

  • Earn 4% back in CT Money on almost everything at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Atmosphere, Pro Hockey Life and other participating stores;
  • Earn 1.5% in CT Money at grocery stores on the first $12,000 you spend each year (excluding Walmart and Costco), and 1% after that;
  • Earn 5¢ per litre in CT Money when you fill up at Gas+ and Petro-Canada locations;
  • Get equal monthly payments with no fee and no interest for 24 months on qualifying purchases of $150 or more at participating stores;
  • Combine your everyday CT Money with bonus offers, like Triangle Bonus Days and flyer offers;
  • No annual fee.

Cons

  • You can only redeem CT Money at Canadian Tire and participating Triangle Rewards stores ($1 in CT Money equals $1 in merchandise), so it’s less flexible than cash back;
  • Purchases outside partner stores, grocery stores and gas stations earn only 0.5%;
  • The standard purchase interest rate is 21.99%, and Canadian Tire Bank may approve some applicants at higher rates (25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash transactions);
  • The card doesn’t include insurance coverage. The Triangle World Elite Mastercard includes purchase security and car rental insurance, but requires a higher income;
  • A 2.5% foreign exchange fee applies to transactions in other currencies.

Who is the bank responsible for the Triangle Mastercard?

The Triangle Mastercard is issued by Canadian Tire Bank. The Triangle Rewards program is owned and operated by Canadian Tire Corporation.

As a federally regulated Canadian bank, Canadian Tire Bank provides cardholder disclosures that explain how interest, fees and its equal payment plans work.

Because the card is tied to the Triangle Rewards program, its main benefits are built around shopping at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, Party City and other participating stores.

For customer service, you can call Canadian Tire Bank at 1-800-459-6415.

What is the Triangle Mastercard app like?

You can track your rewards through the Triangle App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

In the app, you can check your CT Money balance and see offers and bonus promotions from Triangle Rewards.

You can also manage your credit card online: view your account and reward balances, access cardmember offers, sign up for e-statements and manage upcoming payments.

If you use an equal payments plan, keep an eye on your statements and due dates. If Canadian Tire Bank doesn’t receive your full minimum payment within 59 days of a statement date, all special payment plans on your account end, and the regular interest rate applies to the remaining balances.

Why apply for this card?

The Triangle Mastercard makes the most sense for people who already shop often at Canadian Tire and its partner stores and want their purchases to earn CT Money they’ll use there.

Since there’s no annual fee, it can be a low-cost card to keep long term, especially if you use it at partner stores, grocery stores and Gas+ or Petro-Canada locations.

It can also be useful if you plan larger purchases at participating stores, like tires or appliances, and want to pay for them in equal monthly payments without interest, as long as you keep up with each payment.

Before applying, keep in mind the 21.99% interest rate if you expect to carry a balance, and that CT Money can only be used at participating stores. If your income is higher, you may also want to compare the Triangle World Elite Mastercard, which also has no annual fee.
