This card can be a good fit if you spend often on groceries, gas, public transit and recurring bills, since these are the categories where the cash back rate is highest.

At the same time, it requires a minimum income to apply and carries an annual fee, so it makes the most sense for people who spend enough in these categories and will use the included benefits.

Pros and cons of the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite

Before applying, it is important to weigh the earning potential against the eligibility rules and annual costs.

Pros

  • Earn 3% in Cash Back Dollars on eligible Grocery, Gas & Electric Vehicle Charging, and Public Transit purchases, on up to $15,000 in annual purchases in each of these categories;
  • Earn 3% in Cash Back Dollars on eligible Recurring Bill Payments and Streaming, Digital Gaming & Media purchases, on up to $15,000 in combined annual purchases;
  • Earn 1% in Cash Back Dollars on all other eligible purchases, and on purchases in a 3% category once its annual cap is reached;
  • Redeem Cash Back Dollars at any time (minimum $25) to pay down your balance. They don’t expire while your account is open and in good standing;
  • Access Visa Infinite benefits, including 24/7 Visa Infinite Concierge, the Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection, the Visa Infinite Dining Series and entertainment offers;
  • Includes Travel Medical Insurance of up to $2 million, Delayed and Lost Baggage Insurance, Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance, Mobile Device Insurance and a free Deluxe TD Auto Club membership with 24/7 roadside assistance.

Insurance coverage is subject to the terms, limits and exclusions in the Certificate of Insurance provided with the card.

Cons

  • A $139 annual fee applies, which may not be worth it if you don’t spend enough in the 3% categories. The fee is rebated every year if you have a TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan;
  • Income requirement: you need a minimum personal income of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000;
  • Travel medical coverage is limited to the first 10 days of a trip, or the first 4 days if you or your spouse is 65 or older;
  • Foreign transaction fee: a 2.5% fee applies to purchases made in foreign currencies;
  • The purchase interest rate is 21.99%, so carrying a balance from month to month can quickly cancel out your cash back.

Main fees and charges

Based on TD’s official information, these are the key fees and interest rates you should know before applying:

  • Annual fee: $139;
  • Additional cardholders: $50 for the first additional cardholder and $0 for the others, up to a maximum of 3;
  • Interest rate on purchases: 21.99% annually;
  • Interest rate on cash advances: 22.99% annually;
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.

About the issuing bank

TD (The Toronto-Dominion Bank) is one of Canada’s “Big Five” banks and offers a full range of personal banking products, including credit cards, bank accounts, mortgages and investments.

TD cardholders can manage their accounts through the TD app and EasyWeb online banking, and TD’s banking specialists can be reached at 1-855-315-4325.

What is the app experience like?

You can manage the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite Card through the TD app and EasyWeb. With TD’s digital banking tools, you can:

  • Check your balance and transactions;
  • Redeem your Cash Back Dollars to pay down your balance;
  • Set transaction limits, block international purchases or lock your credit card;
  • Receive TD Fraud Alerts on your mobile phone when TD detects suspicious activity on your card.

Who is this card best suited for?

This card tends to work best for Canadians who meet the $60,000 personal income requirement (or $100,000 household) and spend regularly in the 3% categories, such as groceries, gas, public transit and recurring bills.

If most of your spending falls outside these categories, or if you regularly spend more than the $15,000 annual cap in a category, a card with a higher flat rate or a lower annual fee may be a better match.

Why consider applying?

If you want a cash back structure that rewards common household expenses, along with travel insurance and roadside assistance, the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite is worth considering. The key is making sure the $139 annual fee makes sense for your budget.

A simple way to check: at 3%, you’d need to spend about $4,630 per year (around $385 per month) in the eligible categories just to cover the annual fee. Estimate your own spending in these categories and compare the cash back you could earn with the yearly cost of the card.
