It’s designed for Canadians who want to earn rewards while paying down what they owe, with no annual fee.

Pros and cons of the Smart Rewards Mastercard

Understand the advantages and disadvantages of the Smart Rewards Mastercard so you can decide if it fits your financial needs.

Advantages

This credit card offers several benefits:

  • You earn 5 points for every $1 you pay toward your card balance, with no cap on the points you can earn;
  • There is no annual fee, so you won’t pay a yearly cost to keep the card;
  • You can add an authorized user at no cost. Authorized users can make purchases on the account, but you remain responsible for repaying their charges;
  • You can redeem points for account credits, with no minimum redemption amount, or for gift cards;
  • Purchase Assurance protects most new items bought with the card against loss, theft or damage for 120 days, and Extended Warranty doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty, up to 2 additional years;
  • The card includes Price Protection Service, Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance of up to $250,000, Baggage Delay Insurance and Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Waiver Insurance for rentals of up to 31 days.

Insurance coverage and services are subject to the terms, limits and exclusions in the Certificate of Insurance provided with the card.

The rewards program is easy to follow. Points are earned on payments, so there are no spending categories to track, and your points don’t expire while your account remains open.

The structure works best for people who pay their balance in full each month. If you carry a balance, the interest you pay will outweigh the value of the points you earn.

Disadvantages

While the Smart Rewards Mastercard has its perks, some limitations should be considered:

  • The standard interest rate is 29.9% (21.9% in Quebec), so holding a balance on this card can get expensive;
  • Unlike traditional rewards cards, you earn points only when you make payments toward your balance, not on the purchases themselves;
  • Points can be redeemed only for account credits or gift cards, which may not appeal to those seeking travel rewards;
  • The card doesn’t include out-of-country medical insurance, so you’ll need separate coverage if you travel.

Fees and rates

Here are the main costs associated with the Smart Rewards Mastercard:

  • Annual fee: $0;
  • Standard annual interest rate for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances: 29.9% (21.9% for Quebec residents);
  • Interest-free grace period: at least 25 days on new purchases and standard balance transfers, if you pay your new balance in full by the payment due date. Cash advances have no grace period;
  • Foreign currency transactions: converted to Canadian dollars at the Mastercard exchange rate. Any conversion fee is set out in the card’s Disclosure statement;
  • Additional cardholder fee: $0.

Rates and fees checked on September 22, 2026, against Capital One’s Cardholder Agreement (effective September 1, 2026) and Capital One’s announcement of the card. Confirm current terms on the Capital One website before applying.

About the bank

Capital One has offered credit cards in Canada since 1996. The cards are issued by Capital One Bank (Canada Branch), part of Capital One Financial Corporation, based in McLean, Virginia.

As a federally regulated financial institution, Capital One is supervised by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) for compliance with federal consumer protection laws.

Customer service is available at 1-800-481-3239. If a complaint isn’t resolved by the bank, customers can take it to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI).

Mobile app

Capital One offers a mobile app and online banking to help you manage your Smart Rewards Mastercard.

You can track the points you’ve earned in the app or through online banking, and redeem them through the rewards portal in online banking.

Online banking also lets you check your balance and customize the Close to Limit Alert, which warns you when your available credit gets low.

To pay your bill, you can use your own bank’s online or telephone banking, or set up a pre-authorized debit.

Is the Smart Rewards Mastercard for you?

The Smart Rewards Mastercard stands out because it rewards payments instead of spending.

It can be a good match if you pay your balance in full each month and like the idea of earning points for doing it, without an annual fee.

However, the 29.9% interest rate (21.9% in Quebec), the limited redemption options and the lack of out-of-country medical insurance may not suit everyone. Approval depends on Capital One’s credit criteria.
