It stands out for its rewards on everyday purchases, a low 1.5% foreign transaction fee (most cards charge 2.5%) and a mobile app that manages the whole card experience.

Brim also offers a paid version, the Brim World Elite Mastercard, which earns points faster and adds travel insurance. This review focuses on the no-fee Brim Mastercard.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No annual fee, and no fee for additional cardholders;
  • A 1.5% foreign transaction fee, lower than the 2.5% charged by most Canadian cards;
  • Earn uncapped Brim Open Rewards points, which you can redeem on any purchase or as cash back against your statement;
  • Mobile Device Insurance (up to $500), Purchase Security, Extended Warranty and Common Carrier Accident Insurance;
  • Free Boingo Wi-Fi access and the ability to add family members with their own spending limits.

Cons

  • The base earn rate is 1 point per $2 spent, lower than the World Elite version (1 point per $1);
  • No travel medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption, flight delay or baggage insurance. These are only on the Brim World Elite Mastercard;
  • No airport lounge visits are included (Mastercard Travel Pass access costs $32 USD per visit);
  • Interest applies if you carry a balance.

App

Brim is a digital-first card, so most of the experience happens in the Brim app and web portal.

In the app, you can:

  • Track your rewards and redeem points on any purchase or as cash back;
  • Add your card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and other mobile wallets;
  • Lock your card and block online or foreign transactions in real time;
  • Get real-time purchase notifications;
  • Set up Installment Pay on purchases over $500, and add family members to your account.

Brim doesn’t publish a fixed credit limit. Your limit is set when Brim reviews your application, based on factors such as your income and credit history.

Brim may consider a credit limit increase based on how you use your account. Making your payments on time and keeping your balance under control can help. Any increase depends on Brim’s review.

Opinion about the Brim Mastercard

The Brim Mastercard can be a good option for people who want a no-fee card with flexible rewards and a low foreign transaction fee.

Being a digital-first card, you can apply, manage your account and redeem points entirely online or in the app. The 1.5% foreign transaction fee is useful if you shop online in other currencies or travel, and the rewards can be redeemed on any purchase or as cash back, without the restrictions of some other programs.

At the same time, the base earn rate is modest (1 point per $2), and the no-fee version doesn’t include travel insurance. If you want travel medical, trip cancellation or baggage coverage, the paid Brim World Elite Mastercard includes them.
