Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard: how to rebuild your credit
Suitable for people with low credit scores, limited credit history, or financial difficulties

If you are trying to build or rebuild your credit in Canada, the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard is an accessible option to consider.
This credit card was created for Canadians who have had trouble getting approved for traditional credit cards or who are just starting to use credit. With responsible use, it can help you establish a positive payment history and improve your credit score over time.
Below, you’ll find an overview of how this card works, who it’s best suited for, its benefits, its requirements and how to apply.
Who is the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard for?
The Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard is designed for people who need to build or rebuild their credit history.
It’s a good fit for people with a low credit score, a limited credit history, or past financial challenges, like consumer proposals or bankruptcies, that made it difficult to qualify for other credit cards.
Capital One guarantees approval if you meet four conditions. You must:
- Be at least the age of majority in your province or territory of residence;
- Not have a frozen credit profile, and not be prohibited from getting credit for legal or regulatory reasons;
- Not have an existing Capital One account or a pending application for one;
- Not have applied for a Capital One account more than once in the last 30 days, had a Capital One account that wasn’t in good standing in the last year, or be in legal recoveries with Capital One.
Depending on your profile, you may need to provide security funds. Capital One holds these funds as collateral and returns them after your account is closed and fully paid.
Main benefits of the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard
Although this card is focused on credit building rather than rewards, it offers useful protections and features for everyday use.
No annual fee ($0)
The Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard doesn’t charge an annual fee, which helps keep your costs down while you work on improving your credit score.
Purchase Assurance
Most personal items purchased in full with the card are insured against theft, loss or damage for 120 days after the purchase date. Covered items are replaced, repaired or reimbursed at the insurance company’s discretion.
Extended Warranty coverage
When you charge the full cost of an eligible item to the card, Extended Warranty automatically doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty for up to 2 additional years.
Price Protection
If an eligible item you bought with your card is discounted within 60 days of purchase, Price Protection Service may refund you the price difference, up to $100 per item and $500 per calendar year.
Travel and car rental insurance
When you pay the full fare with the card, you, your spouse and your dependent children are insured for up to $250,000 against accidental loss of life or dismemberment while travelling on a common carrier, such as a bus, plane, train or cruise ship.
The card also includes Baggage Delay Insurance, which may reimburse up to $100 per day for up to three days if your checked baggage is delayed for more than four hours, and Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Waiver Insurance for rentals of up to 31 consecutive days.
Credit tools and account alerts
Capital One offers Credit Keeper, a free tool to track your credit score. You can also set up alerts for payment due dates, when you’re close to your credit limit and when there are unexpected charges on your card.
Insurance coverage and services are subject to the terms, limits and exclusions in the Certificate of Insurance provided with the card.

How to apply for the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard
The application process is completed online.
You can start with Capital One’s Quick Check tool to see if you’re pre-approved. Quick Check uses a soft credit inquiry, so it doesn’t affect your credit score. A hard inquiry happens only when you submit your application.
The process generally involves:
- Visiting the official Capital One Canada website;
- Completing the Quick Check or the full application form;
- Submitting your personal, residential and financial information;
- Consenting to a credit check;
- Reviewing and accepting the card’s interest rates and legal terms.
If you’re approved and security funds are required, your account can only be opened after you provide them. Once your account is open, the physical card is mailed to your Canadian address.
Our opinion about the card
The Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard is a useful tool for Canadians who need a second chance at credit or are just starting out.
Its guaranteed approval for eligible applicants, $0 annual fee and broad set of purchase and travel protections make it a strong option for people focused on rebuilding their credit.
However, it isn’t designed for people seeking travel rewards, cash back or low interest rates. With a 29.9% interest rate (21.9% in Quebec), you should pay your balance in full every month to avoid expensive interest charges.
If you use the card as a credit-building tool, keep your balance low and pay on time, it can help you qualify for other credit products in the future.
