The high rates come with an annual cap on cash back, and bonus rates depend on how each store is classified. Below, we explain how the rewards work, what the card costs and who it makes sense for.

How the cash back works

  • 5% cash back at grocery stores
  • 3% cash back on gas and EV charging, wholesale clubs, streaming services, pharmacies and AAA purchases
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

There’s a limit to keep in mind. You can earn up to $500 in cash back per calendar year from grocery stores, wholesale clubs and gas stations combined. After you reach it, those purchases earn 1% for the rest of the year. If all of that cash back came from groceries at 5%, the cap would be reached after about $10,000 in spending.

Bonus rates depend on the merchant category code each store is assigned, which the bank doesn’t control. Superstores, discount stores and convenience stores often don’t code as grocery stores, and warehouse clubs such as Costco code as wholesale clubs, which earn 3%.

You can redeem cash back as a statement credit, a direct deposit or rewards, or use it for qualifying purchases at participating AAA locations.

Welcome offer

New cardholders can get a $100 statement credit after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days of opening the account. The offer is valid one time only and is credited within one to two billing cycles after you meet the spending requirement.

About AAA and Comenity Capital Bank

AAA, the American Automobile Association, was founded in 1902 and operates as a federation of regional clubs that offer roadside assistance, travel, insurance and financial services to members. AAA doesn’t issue the card itself. The card is issued by Comenity Capital Bank under a license from Visa.

Because AAA works through regional clubs, the application goes through your local club’s website, and membership requirements can differ between clubs. Check your club’s page before you apply.

Managing your card

Comenity Capital Bank handles the account, so you manage it through Comenity’s online account and app, where you can check your balance, make payments and track your cash back. Tracking your rewards matters with this card, since you’ll want to know when you’re close to the annual cap.

Our take on the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Card

The AAA Daily Advantage card is a strong option if you spend a moderate amount at supermarkets and want a no-annual-fee card that also pays well on gas, pharmacies and streaming. The lack of foreign transaction fees is a bonus if you travel abroad occasionally.

It’s less appealing if you spend heavily on groceries, since the $500 cap means you’ll drop to 1% partway through the year. It also pays less than expected if you buy most of your groceries at superstores or discount stores. And like any rewards card, it only pays off if you avoid interest by paying the full balance each month.

Approval is subject to Comenity Capital Bank’s credit review, and the issuer doesn’t publish a minimum credit score.

In the next article, we walk through how to apply for the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Card.
