Discover is now part of Capital One, so applications and card terms are handled through Capital One’s systems. Below, we explain how the rewards work, what the card costs and who it suits.

How the cash back works

Each quarter, Discover picks the places where you can earn 5% cash back, such as grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and others. You need to activate the categories every quarter, and the 5% rate applies up to a quarterly spending maximum, which recent terms put at $1,500. After that, and on all other purchases, you earn 1%.

If you forget to activate a quarter’s categories, those purchases earn just 1%. You can redeem cash back in any amount.

Cashback Match and welcome offer

At the end of your first year, Discover automatically matches all the cash back you’ve earned, dollar for dollar, with no limit. If you earn $100 in your first year, you get another $100. The match covers rewards processed from the day your account is approved through your first 365 days and is only for new cardholders.

For a limited time, the card also offers a $100 statement credit when you spend $300 in the first 3 months. The offer is available only through the card’s application page and may not be available if you’ve received a new cardholder bonus for this card in the past 48 months.

About Discover and Capital One

Discover launched its first credit card in 1985 and is now part of Capital One, one of the largest credit card issuers in the United States. The Discover card brand continues, but applications for the Discover it Student Cash Back card go through Capital One’s website. The card runs on the Discover network.

Managing the card

You manage the card through the Discover website and mobile app, where you can check your balance, make payments, activate your quarterly categories and redeem cash back. If a purchase is ever made without your permission, Discover’s $0 Fraud Liability means you’re not responsible for it.

Our take on the Discover it® Student Cash Back card

The Discover it Student Cash Back card is one of the strongest options for college students with little or no credit history. It has no annual fee, doesn’t require a credit score to apply and effectively doubles your rewards in the first year through Cashback Match.

To get the most from it, set a reminder to activate the 5% categories each quarter and pay your balance in full every month, since interest would quickly erase your cash back. If you plan to study or travel abroad, the lack of foreign transaction fees helps, but bring a backup Visa or Mastercard, since Discover isn’t accepted everywhere.

Approval is subject to credit review. Using the card responsibly, including paying on time and keeping your balance low, can help you build good credit.
